Summer, Summer, Summertime…

By admin in LRR

With the insanity of finals week upon us, I always find myself doing one of the most unproductive things for the time. That’s right, I’m putting together a summer reading list, when I should clearly be studying or writing essays! But breaks are shown to be effective in studying- if you study for too long, your brain gets tired. So for everyone who’s prepping for finals, remember to stay healthy, take lots of breaks. Also don’t forget to get plenty of sleep and water!

Back on topic, in perusing the web for a books to read this summer, I came across an interesting meme published by The Guardian (a lovely UK newspaper that you all should read!) back in 2007. They have posted a list of 100 books you should read- and alongside, have claimed that the average population has only read six! I myself have only read 30, so I definitely am making it a priority to get through the rest of the list in the next few weeks.

So are you up for the challenge? See how many you’ve read, and pass this along to your friends!

Long River Review Publication Party!

By admin in LRR

So last night we had the pleasure of hosting our publication party at the UConn Co-op! There was a great turn out, in no part thanks to the guerrilla art projects done in class. We raided the campus with sticky notes, hung signs in trees, and even made fortune cookies with lines of poetry tucked inside!

If you made it to our release party, I’d like to thank you on behalf of our staff for doing so! It was a great night of sampling of the best works from the magazine, alongside amazing food and amazing people!

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of the Long River Review, please stop by the UConn Co-op and pick up a copy! They are only $5 and well worth the read!

Future Footprints

By admin in LRR

I’ll be graduating from the University of Connecticut in 10 days. Oh my god. What else is there to say? I’m living in a state that fluctuates between denial and anxiety. Where have the past 4 years gone? What am I going to do with my life? How am I going to pay back my student loans?

Needless to say, I’ve been putting off answering  these questions until the last possible second. Instead, I’ve been doing a lot of reading. No, none of my reading has answered these questions, but it has helped to get my mind off my current situation. During my avoidance of the real world through reading, I stumbled upon a poem titled “Pairs of Shoes” and liked it so much that I figured I would share it here.

Pairs of Shoes

My future lives come to me in dreams
Come silently with torn soles.
I am like a skilled shoemaker
Greeting the wandering breath of these feet.

These dreams-my other selves
Sprawl out to sleep like a litter of puppies,
Pinches of ashy fur standing up in tufts
Their young hair like hens fluffed feathers
They lie on their stomachs, pressing against my shadow.

Pairs of shoes from yesterday will come tomorrow
Am I their native land, or a land foreign to them?
Their house, or an inn?
Which road guided them to me?

Tonight I decide to open myself to these dreams,
As anxious for their arrival as a child yearning for milk.
Perhaps fireflies will draw them in a different direction
And perhaps the shoes are no longer ripped.

I feel as empty as a new-born creature.
I spread out like a homeless evening
To meet these footprints turning toward me.”

-Nguyen Quyen

Congratulations to the class of 2011, may you stretch out to meet your “future footprints” and find the answers to life’s uncertainty.
