About

About

"A student named Michael Schiavo and I took on the assignment of revamping and renaming the Department's existing publication. It was Mike's idea to call the magazine the Long River Review because it was what one of the early Indigenous tribes had called the Connecticut River. Twenty-eight years since that first issue, the Long River Review is still going strong, thanks to its dedicated student editors and staff through the years."
Wally Lamb
UConn's Creative Writing Program Director (1997-1999)

Founded in 1997 by American author and former UConn Professor Wally Lamb and UConn Professor Marilyn Nelson, the Long River Review is an art and literary journal staffed entirely by UConn undergraduate students in collaboration with graphic design students in UConn’s School of Fine Arts.

The first edition was published in spring of 1998, and since then, the magazine has published new editions annually. Today, Long River Review is dedicated to championing the best work from emerging writers and artists around the globe in our annual print and online journal.

From 1998 to 2016, the contributors were entirely UConn undergraduate and graduate students, but in 2017 we opened up submissions to anyone outside of UConn.

The production class was introduced around 2002 by Professor Penelope Pelizzon. Every fall semester, UConn students interested in having a position(s) on the magazine undergo an interview process with the faculty advisor(s), the current Editor-in-Chief(s), and the current Managing Editor, to enroll in ENGL 3713: Magazine Editing, a course consisting of around 15 students and a faculty advisor.

Long River Review is supported by the Creative Writing Program at the University of Connecticut as well as the UConn Aetna Chair of Writing and the Collins Literary Foundation.
