If you’re looking for an intense, riveting, and frustrating film to watch, I highly recommend Anatomy of a Fall, directed by Justine Triet and starring Sandra Hüller. Hüller plays, funnily enough, the lead character Sandra, an accomplished author and professor who becomes the lead suspect in the death of her husband; her husband who either fell, or was pushed, out of a window in the couple’s home. At the center of it all, Sandra’s young pre-teen son, Daniel, is the lead witness in helping the jury and court to determine if Sandra merely had spousal disputes with her husband, or had murderous intentions.

(Side Note: Although I am a big supporter of movie theaters and agree they carry such importance when it comes to presenting a film, Anatomy of a Fall is a film that can be enjoyed just as much on a streaming platform at home and does not require a giant screen.)
As I watched Anatomy of a Fall with my family in our basement one Saturday night, I could not bear to take my eyes away from the screen for more than a second at a time. Hüller’s captivating, almost-too-realistic performance struck me and kept me intrigued the entire film.
Now, my dad is quite the home-body when it comes to movies following the pandemic–– and one of the main reasons is because he can use the bathroom whenever, and however many times, during the movie because he has the luxury of a pause button. But, what is a luxury to my dad, is a pain like no other to me–– at least in the case of Anatomy of a Fall. Every pause meant more waiting to find out what had actually happened to Sandra’s husband, what Sandra and her husband’s relationship was really like, what happened to Daniel that made him go partially blind, and how the prosecution and defense would respond in court.

I truly was on the edge of my seat throughout my watch of this entire film, and can say with the utmost confidence that it is the most perfect, realistic display of a “who-dunnit” mystery. If your inner-child misses murder-mystery board games like Clue, Anatomy of a Fall is basically the grown-up version that even leaves you questioning after Sandra’s verdict is decided, and consequently, when the movie is over.
