Last summer (2025), I saw Interstellar for the first time. I was at my friend’s house in New York, and we were sitting on her couch scrolling through movies on the TV while we set up a table of snacks. Top Gun: Maverick appeared on the screen, and I suggested we watch it. My friend hadn’t seen it, but she asked if I had, and I responded yes. She kept scrolling, on the hunt for something that we both hadn’t seen, until our eyes fell upon Interstellar. I have always been a fan of space topics and science fiction, so when she asked me if I wanted to watch it, I said, “Sure, why not?”
This movie came out in 2014. How had I never seen this MASTERPIECE? Clearly, I’m really late to the game. I can’t even joke about being fashionably late — we’re past the point of no return (also known as the event horizon), but that doesn’t change anything about the fact that this movie quickly earned its place as my favorite movie of all time, and I proceeded to watch it over and over again. Plenty of movies fall into the “really like” category in my mind, but none have made me so anxious to watch it again so soon after seeing it for the first time the same way Interstellar did.
For some who are not aware (in which case, this post was literally made with you in mind — GO SEE IT), Interstellar is a science fiction movie directed by Christopher Nolan that focuses on a man called Cooper who works as a farmer on a futuristic, dystopian Earth plagued by dust storms and famine. He has a daughter named Murph and a son named Tom who live on the farm with him and Cooper’s father-in-law, Donald. Strange things begin to happen in his area, and Cooper sets out to solve the mystery, which eventually brings him out to witness the magnitude of space in person.
Not only does this film have stunning visuals, but also fantastic and memorable music (composed by Hans Zimmer), great acting and characters (TARS is a treasure), and the kind of writing that comes together so extraordinarily that it blows your mind — especially because the ideas featured in this film do, in fact, exist. Yes, although Interstellar is fiction, much of it is based on real theoretical physics, making the film feel that much more astonishing. The care and attention to detail that the creators put into making this film feel genuine is evident.
I can’t say much more without spoiling something, so jump right into this movie and get ready to be dazzled by the wonders of the universe, the power of love and family, and an unforgettable journey. My only regret is not seeing this in theaters back in 2014, but it’s better late than never. If one day they decide to put it back in theaters, I’ll definitely be seeing you there!
