There’s art almost everywhere you look. That song you’re listening to? It sounds like a masterpiece to you, but it could sound like nails on a chalkboard to someone else. Graffiti tags all over that abandoned building that has yet to be destroyed? Some might glance over it, but taking some time to look at it, it is art. But what about the things we see everyday that just escape our notice?
The sun rises and sets every day, and sometimes, at the right time, when the clouds are perfectly distanced from the sun, the last minutes of daylight seem so otherworldly that it could feel like the ending of a movie. What about sports? The hard crack of a bat hitting a baseball straight down the field for a home run with all the bases loaded. The deafening buzzer that sounds when a basketball team is only three points away from going into overtime, and shooting the ball from half-court just makes it. The wind is just perfect enough for you to know that this golf ball is going to go at least 400 yards, and when you swing that driver, it goes directly where you want it. Art. What about food? Making a steak for the first time and having it be a perfect medium rare with the salt forming a crusty exterior with a juicy interior. Making what feels like a Three-Star Michelin meal with not a lot of resources, and having your meal come out exceptional is art.
Art is everywhere — well almost everywhere. Sometimes there are things that are just revolting to look at, something that’ll make you say “That isn’t art at all!” Art is always subjective, and someone can hate what we like. That’s okay! Find something that seems like art to you, and cherish it.
