Songs That Should’ve Been On The Twilight Soundtrack

LRR, February 11, 2024February 8, 2025

The Twilight Saga.

Angst, vampires, star-crossed lovers, and a creepy, CGI baby.

The book and movie series that had a tight grip around my adolescent brain.

I remember being 10 years old and acting out the vampire baseball scene with my cousins in my grandparents’ back yard. Even though I was obsessed with these movies when I was a kid, I mostly forgot about them as I went through high school and then college.

That was until the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the world shut down, everyone wanted one piece of comfort in their lives to hold on to in such uncertain times: whether that be starting a crochet project, cooking complicated recipes, or diving headfirst into a puzzle you’ll never finish.

For me, I consumed Twilight. I watched all the movies twice, read the books, and watched every single movie review on YouTube. Twilight to me fully encapsulated the vibe of the 2008 mall-goth I always wanted to be as a kid.

I still look at Twilight with nostalgia, mostly due to the amazing soundtrack that almost acts as a period piece: “Decode” by Paramore, “Supermassive Black Hole” by Radiohead, and “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine all bring back pure memories for me. These songs, as my friends like to point out whenever I have the aux, sound like the music I listen to today.

Without further ado, here are five songs that should have been on the Twilight soundtrack.

  1. “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” by Deftones (1997)

I don’t care where just far/ (Away)/ I don’t care where just far/ (Away)

I know it’s nu metal, but the angst and the rejection of the rest of society really gives it its place on my hypothetical soundtrack.

2. “Vampire Empire” by Big Thief  (2023)

I am empty ’til she fills/ alive until she kills/ In her vampire empire

This one might be a little too obvious, but the actual build-up and tension of the song– it’s Twilight.

3. “Falling in Love Again” by Joyce Manor  (2014)

Hope you don’t think I don’t care/ Because I do I just don’t know if/ I should feel this bad about you

The lead singer of Joyce Manor can delicately balance being whiny and angry. That’s all I want in a song.

4. “The Razor’s Apple” by Fleshwater  (2022)

These are the symptoms of you/ Making me sick and it gets contagious/ I’ve lost my patience/ More desperate than before

Can’t you picture a slow-mo vampire scene with this song playing underneath?

5. “Smoke Signals” by Phoebe Bridgers  (2017)

You/ You must’ve been lookin’ for me/ Sendin’ smoke signals/ Pelicans circling

Twilight has its desolate moments: it’s a young adult romance series. There’s nothing more solitary than the music of Phoebe Bridgers.
